Going against the law and closing the doors partially or fully on migrants who are fleeing violence, persecution, or possible death is not just inhumane but un-American. Biden’s new executive order just does that as it bars immigrants who cross the Southern Border from seeking asylum, a departure from a decade-long protocol, once a “daily threshold” is met. The Biden administration’s executive actions to bar migrants who cross our Southern border from receiving asylum when “high levels of encounters at the Southern Border” will impact the families who are vulnerable to persecution and death. ARISE strongly objects to these steps making “Rights to Asylum,” almost impossible for people seeking asylum and or redefining the laws, even though the laws on Asylum clearly define what it is.
ARISE is disappointed with the Biden Administration and is supportive of the ACLU’s stance that “new rules contravene U.S. immigration law and the Administrative Procedure Act, which outlines the procedural requirements that agencies must follow when implementing certain policies.” Competing with Trump and his fanatics is not the approach to dealing with the humanitarian crisis at the border. People fleeing for their lives deserve a chance to present their cases as provided by US law no matter where or how they enter the United States.
Having said that, we would like to thank President Biden for the steps taken for family preservation through the executive action for spouses of U.S. citizens who have been in the U.S. for at least 10 years. We welcome the steps the administration has taken to protect the U.S., Spouses, and their children from deportation. Opening the door to work permits and a pathway to citizenship while working and living in the U.S. legally, is a commendable step. But the patchwork of executive actions is not going to resolve the challenges that immigrants, including the DACA recipient, are facing every day. ARISE is advocating for the legislative change that is going to prioritize the lives of vulnerable migrants and their families instead.
