ARISE has been closely monitoring all the executive orders brought by the Trump administration since January the 20th. Luckily, some of them are being challenged in the court and others have received stay orders from the Federal Judges. ARISE strongly condemns these executive orders as it believes in the rights of Refugees and Immigrants. ARISE has been educating migrants on their rights and distributing KNOW Your RIGHTS Red Cards to the families that it is working with. ARISE believes that informing people on their rights, including the two major ones: right to remain silent (5th amendment) and right to refuse ICE and other federal entities enter the homes of these families without a warrant signed by a Judge (4th amendment), really saves people from unnecessary search and deportation. ARISE has been continuously documenting the cruelty of this administration unfolding against the American values that we espouse. This is what has happened in a month so far:
On January 20th, Day 1, the Trump administration attempted to abolish birthright citizenship, going against the 14th amendment. The Trump administration also suspended the resettlement program, barred asylum for people arriving at the southern border and shut down the CBP app.
On the 22nd, the administration cancelled the flights for refugees already approved for travel to the states and threatened to prosecute local officials who obstruct immigration enforcement.
On the 23rd, the Trump administration signed a memo and provided ICE the power to quickly remove all migrants who entered the US legally in the last 2 years using a CBP app targeting a program for the temporary protection of Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela, and Haiti. Please keep in mind that these immigrants have followed the law proposed by the previous administration to the very last alphabet just to be thrown out by this administration and we condemn that.
On the 24th, the Trump administration gave state and local authority to enforce immigration laws and we condemn that as we believe that it is NOT the job of the state and the local authorities to deport immigrants. It will have an impact that has documented engagement backfire on police officers’ trust in the community.
On the 27th, it paused the federal grants and loans including those organizations directly working with refugees and immigrants.
On the 28th, it revoked deportation protection for Venezuelans by repealing the 18-month extension that was given to 600,000 Venezuelans by the previous administration.
On Jan 29th, the Trump administration opened a Navy base at Guantanamo Bay to hold Migrants.
On February 5th, The Trump administration circulated a memo signed by Attorney General Pam Bondi limiting the access to the federal funding to sanctuary cities.
On the 6th, The Trump administration filed a suit against Chicago, Illinois, in a federal court, alleging that the city and Cook County were obstructing the enforcement of the federal government to deport people.
On the 10th, Homeland Security Secretary Kristin Noam asked the IRS to crack down on migrants through employers.
On the 12th, Attorney Pam Bondi sued New York for its immigration policies that let people get driver licenses without asking for a status and the same day the administration deported Asian migrants to Panama.
On the 14th, the administration fired 18 immigrant judges and also made it difficult for the children of migrants to cross the border to be united with their family.
On the 18th, the migrants trapped in Panama were stripped off of their passports and barred from talking to their attorneys.
On the 19th, the administration eliminated federal benefits for migrants.
On the 20th, the administration cut the protection of TPS for Haitians Revoking the TPS status of 18 months extension provided by the previous administration to more than 500,000 Haitians. That means they could be deported back to Haiti after August.
On the 21st, it proposed the use of military sites to detain undocumented people.
ARISE Condemns the constant cruelty on Immigrants and Refugees.
Please note that this is not the exhaustive list of actions taken by the Trump administration. Trusted news sources like NY Times and NPR are documenting all actions taken by this administration. Please reach out to your representative and ask them to stand up for your values and save immigrant and refugee neighbors whose families are being dismantled as you are reading this. And lastly, please continue to support ARISE in its mission to fight this injustice and protect the rights of all immigrants and refugees.
